3 Credits: 3 Hours. Provides an opportunity to understand and evaluate many aspects of public policy and social issues that affect the lives of persons with disabilities and their families, including state, regional, national and international forces and trends, the principles of self-determination, and participation of persons with disability in planning and implementation. Students will explore a broad range of disability policies from intersectional, interdisciplinary and transnational perspectives that will equip them to navigate various systems and to advocate for disability rights and justice. The course will introduce students to the historical development of disability public policy and to contemporary issues, so as to work effectively with various stakeholders—the state and the community. It will cover major policy areas including but not limited to employment, education, health, income supports, transportation, community housing, accessibility, and independent living. Students will also explore the role of the disability rights movement in shaping different legal systems, and will learn tools for advocating for legislative change and reform to enhance well-being and equal opportunity.PREREQUISITES: SWK 670 or admission to the Advanced Standing Program.
